Treatment summary

Don’t put up with loose dentures, loose teeth, or gaps in your smile for a moment longer. Our custom-made implant-retained dentures are a tooth-mimicking and natural solution to get you biting, chewing and speaking without issue again. Just as importantly, they can restore your confidence along the way.

What are implant-retained dentures?

Losing teeth or living with dentures that you can’t properly chew with is a daily battle. Implant-retained dentures provide the highest level of stability among tooth-replacement restorations. As the implants are anchored into the jaw under anaesthetic, once your dentures are fixed over the top, they do not risk moving around in your mouth, no matter what type of foods you’re eating or how hard you laugh.

False teeth unsupported by implants have great potential to cause problems fairly early (in the first 5 years), such as gum irritation and jawbone shrinkage. The latter point is particularly problematic, as once the jawbone recedes, your dentures cease to fit your mouth.

Benefits of implant-retained dentures

They last for many years: Implant-retained dentures don’t force your jaw to succumb to jawbone recession.

This means they fit your mouth for significantly longer and protect the supporting structures, including the gums. With good care, you can expect your implants to last for 20+ years, whilst your dentures may need replacing after 5-10.

Better chewing capacity: With the stability provided by implants, your dentures will be extremely efficient at biting and chewing through foods of all textures.

Improved speech: As conventional dentures cause jawbone recession, once they cease to fit properly, enunciating certain sounds can become a challenge. With your teeth firmly in place, you won’t have to worry about your dentures moving around in your mouth and causing speech impediments.

Improved overall quality of life: All of the points above add up to improved quality of life. The peace of mind that comes with living with a full set of functional and natural-looking teeth cannot be overstated. Many of our patients tell us they’re overwhelmed at how much more confident they become once they have the (new) incentive to smile around other people.

Your HAZELWOOD EXPERIENCE

Treatment journey

Having implant-retained dentures placed is a multi-step process involving treatment planning (on occasion, the extraction of failing teeth), a healing period, digital dental scans and denture fitting.

Treatment Journey Count Image

Consultation

Hazelwood Dental Treatment Journey Image

We will assess your eligibility for implants by taking a CBCT scan of your mouth and carrying out a full examination of your teeth and soft tissue structure (tongue, gums and palate). If you don’t have sufficient jawbone density to support implants, we can perform a bone graft (one of the few dental practices to offer this in-house) to build up the necessary bone needed to support the implants.

The findings of your consultation will be used to create a fully costed Treatment Plan that includes each step involved on the route to a full smile again.

Implant placement surgery

The implants are placed under local anaesthetic. Once the surgery is completed, the healing period begins (this phase can take between 3-9 months). The implant-to-jaw healing process is called osseointegration, and during this time, the bone in the jaw grows around the implant as if it were a real tooth root (amazing, right?!)

Restoration

Once your dentist is certain that the healing period is complete, your implant dentures are created to sit over the top of the implants, the design of which is based on digital scans of your teeth. The individual teeth that make up your implant dentures will be the size and shade-matched to your existing natural teeth.

Frequently asked questions

How long do implant-retained dentures last?

Implant-retained dentures are designed to be functional for many years.

With good care, there’s no reason why your implants can’t last a lifetime. However, your dentures are likely to need replacing after 5-10 years.

To maximise your dentures’ lifespan, make sure you:

  • Visit the dentist and hygienist for check-ups and routine cleanings.
  • Adopt a good at-home oral care routine (implants can still sustain gum disease!).
  • Do not smoke (this is one of the biggest reasons why implants fail, as it cuts off the vital blood supply to the gums).

Implants have a success rate of over 90 – 98.9% between 15 and 5 years (respectively).

Is getting an implant painful?

As local anaesthetic is used, you should not feel anything.

Some mild pressure whilst your dentist places your implant is normal (though many people do not experience this).

You may experience some discomfort for 2-3 days after your surgery whilst your body begins the immediate healing process. This can be accompanied by minor swelling and bleeding. In the vast majority of cases, pain experienced in the 2-3 days after implant placement can be controlled with over-the-counter painkillers.

Can I get implant-retained dentures on the NHS?

Only in very rare circumstances are implants available through the NHS.

Implants are considered an elective treatment and the gold standard in tooth replacement. We strongly consider opting for dental implants over conventional dentures and bridges, as they are a huge step up in terms of function and aesthetics.

Do I need to replace missing teeth/compromised dentures or bridges?

Of course, any treatment you have is your decision.

However, it is important to know that sometimes, persisting with either a denture or failing teeth can mean the bone available for treatments such as implants can reduce over time, making treatment more complicated as time goes on.

You may also find that your oral health deteriorates further due to living without a full mouth of teeth.
