Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are the undisputed champion of tooth replacement and are the only tooth replacement element that can integrate organically with your anatomy, becoming a part of you once the healing process is complete. As a solution that mimics nature so closely, it’s no wonder why they provide the best chewing function and the most natural aesthetics.

Reasons for dental implants: Dental implants address the issue of tooth loss. Whether you’ve lost a tooth to injury, gum disease, decay, trauma or illness, implants can be inserted to fill the gap, providing a tooth replacement solution that functions naturally and looks identical to a
tooth.

Frequently asked questions

Is getting an implant painful?

As local anaesthetic is used, you should feel only some mild to moderate pressure whilst your dentist places your implant.

You may experience some discomfort for 2-3 days after your surgery whilst your body begins the immediate healing process. This can be accompanied by minor swelling and bleeding. In the vast majority of cases, pain experienced in the 2-3 days after implant placement can be controlled with over-the-counter painkillers.

How long does implant treatment take?

This depends on several factors, including:

  • How many teeth need to be replaced.
  • Whether or not you need a bone graft.
  • How long the healing process takes.
  • How you look after your teeth during the healing period.

Typically, you can expect the process to take between 4-9 months from start to finish (including planning stages and crown placement).

Can I have a bridge retained with implants?

Yes. Implant-retained bridges are a popular choice for patients with multiple missing teeth.

They are also more economical than single implants, as fewer implants are needed to secure a whole row of teeth in place.

Implant bridges offer significantly more strength than conventional bridges. The bridge is fixed in position over the top of the implants, which are surgically placed in the jawbone.

Implant bridges are one of our most popular missing teeth treatments, and in some cases, only 2 implants are needed to secure 3 or 4 missing teeth in a row.

Is implant surgery always successful?

At Hazelwood, we have over a 95% success rate in placing implants.

One of the biggest factors compromising the healing period (and the overall success of the procedure) is smoking, which cuts off the blood supply to the gums. We strongly recommend refraining from smoking (and vaping) during the healing period (and beyond, if you can!)

How will I look once my implants have been fitted?

Implants are not “fit and forget”. They need the same care and attention as natural teeth.

On completion of treatment, it will be necessary for you to attend a number of recall appointments to check the condition of the implants and to adjust the bite if required.
