Enhance your implant treatment with accurate imaging.

A CBCT scan is a key diagnostic tool used in planning for dental implants. This advanced imaging technique provides a detailed 3D view of your mouth and jaw, allowing your dentist to make precise decisions regarding your implant treatment.

Why are CBCT scans important?

A CBCT scan provides essential information for your dentist, such as:

  • Bone Depth and Density: Unlike traditional X-rays, CBCT scans measure bone depth, width, and density in three dimensions.
  • Critical Structures: The scan allows your dentist to assess nerve canals and sinus cavities to avoid complications during implant placement.
  • Precise Implant Planning: By visualising your jaw from all angles, the scan ensures that your implants are placed accurately for optimal results.

The benefits of CBCT scans

CBCT scans allow for precise implant placement by providing the following:

  • A clear view of your jaw’s bone structure.
  • Information about the density and condition of your jawbone, which helps determine if additional treatments like bone grafting are needed.
  • Accurate mapping of nerves and sinuses to avoid potential risks during the procedure.

Orthopantomogram (OPG) X-ray

An Orthopantomogram (OPG) X-ray provides a panoramic, wide-view image of the upper and lower jaw, including the associated teeth from root to crown. This single image offers a comprehensive overview, which is not possible with periapical or bite-wing X-rays.

Benefits of a digital OPG X-ray

  • Orthodontic Treatment Planning: The OPG X-ray is particularly useful in planning orthodontic treatments, as it presents a complete view of the teeth and can highlight unerupted or impacted teeth.
  • Assessment of Wisdom Teeth: It allows for a clear evaluation of wisdom teeth, helping to identify any potential issues early on.
  • TMJ Evaluation: The OPG X-ray can also assist in assessing the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) for any underlying problems, ensuring more accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Frequently asked questions

How does a CBCT scan work?

CBCT scanners use multiple X-ray beams to create a series of images from different angles. These images are processed by a computer to produce a detailed 3D rendering of your jaw and teeth, offering your dentist a comprehensive view of your oral structures.

What happens during a CBCT scan?

The procedure is straightforward and takes less than a minute. You’ll stand while the machine rotates around your head, capturing the necessary images. No special preparation is needed, but you will be asked to remove any jewellery, glasses, or dental devices.

Are CBCT scans safe?

CBCT scans are quick, non-invasive, and generally safe. They use more radiation than a standard X-ray but much less than a traditional CT scan. The level of radiation is minimal and is unlikely to cause harm. However, it is advisable not to have a CBCT scan if you are pregnant.
